A strong geometric storm warning has been issued for October 4th after a massive solar flare was observed headed towards Earth.

This storm could disrupt GPS systems and satellite feeds. It will also allow us in New York to see the Northern Lights.


 

NOAA stated that the storm will drop the Southern boundary of the Northern Lights into New York State and you could be able to see them tonight and early tomorrow morning.

This will not be the first time New Yorkers have had a chance to see the Northern Lights from our own backyard. This year has been full of sun activity and there have already been several occasions where the Northern Lights were visible in New York State.

WHAT IS THE AURORA BOREALIS?

The Northern Lights or Polar Lights happen when the light from the sun hits the magnetic fields of the Earth's atmosphere and produces a variety of colors.

WHEN CAN I SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

Usually, the best time to see Aurora Borealis is between November and February but it is possible to see it outside those times. Usually, the best time to see the Northern Lights is 10 pm and 3 am.

CAN I SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS WITH THE NAKED EYE?

Yes, you can, but what you see won't look like the photos you see on the internet. Cameras use a form of long exposure and this allows for the capture of colors and details that are impossible for the human eye to detect.
