A massive eruption from the sun should light up most of New York State tonight. A Geomagnetic Storm Watch has been issued, which could lead to the Northern Lights being visible across the state.

Northern Lights Could Be Visible Across New York State

Due to this storm, the Northern Lights' southern boundary could drop far enough south for people along the New York/Canada border to see the Northern Lights tonight.

If you plan on staying up to see the Northern Lights, just know you will want to have your phone or a camera. The Northern Lights will be faint to see with just your naked eye, but should be very visible when using a camera.

The best time to see the Northern Lights is between 10 pm and 3 am, with the peak time to see the Northern Lights being between 11 pm and Midnight.

Some of the best viewing could be along the shores of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Looking over the lakes gives you a night balance of dark sky and lack of artificial lights.
