It is a new month and that means several new laws will start in New York State.

Here is a look at some new laws that will begin this month in New York.

HELP FOR VETERANS AT WORK

Starting on February 9th, all state agencies will have to have one employee who acts as a special liaison for veterans with the purpose of helping veterans with services, communications, and making sure their needs are being taken care of at the agency.

MORE HELP FINANCIALLY FOR TEACHERS

As of February 11th, a new law will allow retired teachers who have returned to public service to combine their service credits earned before and after retirement. If the teacher suspended their retirement benefit they can now recalculate it after two years of employment.

MAKING RESERVATIONS AT RESTAURANTS EASIER

Starting on February 17th, the new law will require a contract between third-party businesses and restaurants in order to make reservations. This should help with overbooking and ghostbooking at restaurants.

CANCELLING A GYM MEMBERSHIP WILL BE EASIER

Starting on February 23rd, the new law will require businesses like gyms, spas, and other membership driven locations to allow for membership cancellations via phone, email, and online. It also shortened the cancellation and refund deadlines.

MORE CONTROL OVER STOLEN ELECTRONICS

Starting on February 24th, the new law will require wireless companies to disable or not activate any devices that are reported stolen.

BETTER SAFETY FOR RETAIL WORKERS

The new Retail Worker Safety Act will go into effect on February 24th. This new law requires retail employers to create and enforce new programs to prevent workplace violence between co-workers and between customers and employees.

New Laws That Start In 2024 In New York State

This year was a very busy year for the New York State government. Overall 682 bills were introduced passed by the legislative and signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul this year.
