
New Laws That Start In April In New York State
It is the start of a new month, and that means some new laws have begun or will begin in New York State.
Here is a look at some new laws that started on April 1st.
Cost Of Living Adjustment for Veterans' Funerals
As of April 1st, New York State now requires yearly cost of living adjustments to be tied to inflation for state reimbursements to veterans' organizations for funeral expenses. The state also capped the amount to $2000 per burial.
Name Change For Children
The new law in New York now allows family courses to handle name changes for children under the age of 18 during custody and paternity disputes. It also now requires all parties involved to approve the change.
New Laws That Start Later This Month
Starting on April 17th, New York State will now require all schools in the state to adopt new safer building designs by creating new 5-year plans. These plans will be used to help grow community involvement and look for ways to fund safety equipment like metal detectors in schools.
Big changes are coming to limo laws on April 20th. Starting on that Sunday, it will no be a crime for a business to let someone drive a limo or company vehicle with a suspended license. Fines will start at $5000 per offense and could be increased to $25000 per offense. Companies could also face other penalties.

Most of these laws were signed by Governor Kathy Hochul at the end of last year but due to the time frame of getting everything worked out, they didn't start at the beginning of the new year.
