Now that 2025 is here there will be some things that will be different in New York State.

There are some new laws that you need to be aware of that officially started on January 1st, 2025 in New York State.

MINIMIUM WAGE INCREASE

As part of a three-year deal, the minimum wage will once again increase in New York State on January 1st. Minimium wage will increase to $15.50 for many New Yorkers while workers downstate in New York City, Westchester, and Long Island will make a minimum of $16.50.

PRENATAL LEAVE WILL BE AVAILABLE

Starting in 2025, people who are pregnant can get paid time off from their job for prenatal visits. These include doctor appointments, check-ups, and other pregnancy related appointments. Employers in New York State must provide at least 20 hours of paid prenatal personal leave for their employees.

CHANGE TO NEW YORK STATE CONSTITUTION

This past November, voters in New York State approved "Prop 1" which prohibits any person, business, or organization, as well as state and local governments from discrimination pursuant to law. "Prop 1" added to the current protections in the New York State Constitution that cover race, color, creed, and religion. The new amendment will now also cover ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive healthcare and autonomy.
