While Hurricanes are very rare in Western New York, they do happen every once in a while. According to the website homefacts.com, the last time a hurricane moved across Western New York was back in 2006.

It was Hurricane Ernesto and it came across the region in September that year moving just East of Rochester. The storm was big enough to impact the weather in all of Western New York.

Since 1930 there have been eight Hurricanes that have come within 150 miles of the City of Buffalo.

They are:

Ernesto - 8/24/2006 - 9/4/2006
Dennis - 8/24/1999 - 9/8/1999
Fran - 8/23/1996 - 9/10/1996
Opal - 9/27/1995 - 10/6/1995
Hugo - 9/10/1989 - 9/25/1989
Candy - 6/22/1968 - 6/26/1968
Connie - 8/3/1955 - 8/15/1955
Most of these storms are just like Beryl and will come through the area as a Tropical Storm instead of a hurricane.
A tropical storm has maximum sustained surface winds ranging from 39-73 mph while a hurricane has maximum sustained surface winds of 74 mph or greater. Tropical storms do less wind damage and usually have less water damage associated with them as well.

That doesn't mean that are dangerous or not deadly. The rain and winds from Tropical storms can still cause flooding issues and damage to houses and other structures.
The best thing to do is keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared in case something goes wrong.
