New Laws That Start In March In New York State

It is the start of a new month and that means some new laws will start here in New York State.

You might be wondering why all these new laws just don't start at the beginning of the year. Many times when a bill is signed into law, there is a grace period to allow people or businesses to adjust to the new guidelines.

Sometimes that grace period is 30 days, sometimes it is 90 days or even longer, and that is what leads to new laws starting at different times of the year.

Here is a look at some of the new laws that will go into effect this month.

Birthing Room Rights

New York Senate Bill S5992A is an update to the current health code laws. This new law, which will go into effect on March 11th, now allows mothers who are giving birth full access to their doulas in healthcare facilities during delivery, and in-care treatment post delivery.

Victim Rights Amendment

New York Senate Bill S5502 called for an amendment to the current victim rights law in New York State. Starting on March 13th, the new amendment calls for courts and district attorneys to give victims and/or their family members, of crimes detailed information about their rights, including copies of any parole hearings.

Criminal Record History Reporting

New York Senate Bill S940 calls for an amendment to the current executive and education law where schools and government agencies from requiring people to provide a copy of their criminal history. The agency and/or school would need to conduct their own background check instead. This new law starts on March 22nd.
