We could see electric bills in New York skyrocket over the next couple of months as Canada has added a surcharge to the electricity it imports to the US.

The premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, announced that he has added a 25% surcharge to all the electricity that is exported to the US. Over 1.5 million users in Michigan, Minnesota, and New York State get part of their electricity from Ontario.

According to Ford, you could end up seeing an increase of $100 per month to your electric bill due to the surcharge.

The premier of Ontario, in a press release, also threatened to increase the surcharge or even completely stop exporting electricity to the US if proposed tariffs on goods imported from Canada into the US are put into place.

“President Trump’s tariffs are a disaster for the U.S. economy. They’re making life more expensive for American families and businesses,” said Premier Doug Ford. “Until the threat of tariffs is gone for good, Ontario won’t back down. We’ll stand strong, use every tool in our toolkit and do whatever it takes to protect Ontario.”

At the time of this writing, Ontario has 12 direct connections into the US that import electricity. There is one in Minnesota, four in Michigan, and 7 in New York State.

That means customers in New York State could feel the effects of the surcharge the most in the US.
