Today, tariffs proposed by President Donald Trump are expected to go into effect, and they will have a bearing on the prices you pay for everyday items.

The president imposed 25% tariffs on goods imported from Canada and Mexico and an increase to 20% for goods imported from China.

Some of the items that will be impacted by the tariff on Canada include:

Wood, Iron, and steel appliances; Cereal, flour, starch, and milk products; Alcoholic beverages, cork products, carpet, and cotton. The increase in the tariff on raw and produced goods is expected to increase the cost of these items in the US.

Some of the items that will be impacted by tariffs on Mexico include:

Cereals, Processed fruits and nuts, Tropical fruits, Tomatoes, onions, lettuce and cabbage, Dairy products, eggs and honey, Avocados, and Raw sugar.

Some of the items that will be impacted by tariffs on China include:

Electronics, plastics, toys and games, footwear and clothing, and machinery.

Overall, financial experts predict that the average cost of living for New Yorkers will increase around $1200 per person per year.

On the flip side, all three countries have stated that they will impose their own tariffs on American goods, which could lead to less profits for American companies and a reduction in the workforce.

We could also see the cost of gas increase at the pump as the US imports gas from Canada. This is ahead of the switch to summer fuel, which is more expensive to produce already, and prices usually go up every year in the month of May.
