Massive Cancer Screening Event Coming To Western New York
This weekend is the perfect weekend to take some time to make sure you are healthy.
ECMC, Western New York's only Level 1 trauma center, is holding a special cancer screen event on Saturday.

The Cancer Screen and Prevention event will run from 11 am until 1 pm at the ECMC Dental Center at 800 Hertel Avenue in Buffalo
The event will feature exams for Oral Cancer Screening, Fit Kits for Colorectal Cancer Screening, PSA Draws for Prostate Cancer Screening, Lung Cancer Prevention Information, Smoking Cessation, and Referrals for Low Dose Chest CT, HPV Vaccinations and Referrals to Primary Care doctors.

The event will also feature educational information about Advanced Care Planning, Breast Cancer, Civil Legal Issues, Health Care Proxies, Living Wills, and Healthier eating.
The event is very important as studies show that early cancer detection saves lives. When cancer is diagnosed at early stages, it is more likely to be treated successfully.

Here is a look at some cancer statistics from ECMC:
In 2024, there will be an estimated 58,450 new cases of oral cavity and oropharyngeal (throat) cancer
The average age of someone diagnosed is 64, however, 1 in 5 cases occur in people under 55, 2x more likely in men than women
Colorectal is the second leading cause of all cancer-related deaths in the US
30% of cases under the age of 50 can be attributed to family history or genetic factors
1 in 3 people in the US who should get tested, have never been screened
1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, 60% of cases are men 65 or older
The leading cause of all cancer-related deaths in the US. The risk for men is 1 in 16 and the risk for women is 1 in 17
Screening is recommended for people who smoke or used to smoke but don’t have signs or symptoms
HPV Vaccine can prevent multiple types of cancer and can be given up to the age of 45
HPV is the most important risk factor for cervical cancer in women and oropharyngeal cancer in men
The ECMC Cancer Screening and Prevention event is free to attend and is open to anyone in Western New York.
