While tornados are pretty rare in Western New York, they do form and touch down on the ground.

The last time we saw a tornado touchdown was last year on July 28th. That tornado touchdown in Wyoming at around 10:40 am in the town of Java near Route 78 and Chaffee Road. It moved along the ground for around 10 miles before breaking up. The tornado lasted about 15 minutes and the wind speeds reached around 115 miles per hour. The winds were strong enough to have the tornado reach an EF-2.

The tornado did some damage to a barn and uprooted some trees. Overall the damage done to the barn and surrounding areas was around $750,000 dollars.
The good news is that no injuries were reported with that tornado.

If a tornado does form and touchdown today there are some things you can do to make sure you stay safe.

5 WAYS TO STAY SAFE DURING A TORNADO

1-Be aware of the weather. Keep track of possible tornados by listening to the radio.

2-If you are inside your home, go to your basement, or an interior room away from windows.

3-If you are at work or school, stay away from windows and do not go to large open rooms such as cafeterias, gymnasiums, or auditoriums.

4-If you are outside seek shelter inside a sturdy building

5-Being in a vehicle during a tornado is not safe. Try to drive to the closest shelter. If you are unable to make it to a safe shelter, either get down in your car and cover your head or seek shelter in a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine.
