Now that we are into May and the "snow season" is officially over in New York State, it is time to announce the winner of the annual Golden Snowball Award.

The Golden Snowball Award is given to one of the 5 major cities in New York State that get the most snow during the Winter season. The cities that compete for the Golden Snowball every year are Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, and Albany.

This year was very interesting as most cities, including the winning city had a well below average amount of snowfall for the year.

Many weather experts blamed the El Nino for causing warmer and drier conditions this past Winter.

This year's winner according to the latest snowfall data is Buffalo! They are back-to-back-to-back-to-back winners. Buffalo has won the Golden Snowball award every year since the winter of 2020-21.

Buffalo ended the Winter season with just over 71 inches of snow, which was around 23 inches less than normal.

The "Queen City" still had enough snow to hold off Syracuse which came in 2nd for this past Winter with 60.8 inches of snow.

Rochester was 3rd overall with 52.5 inches of snow, followed by Binghamton at 4th overall with 47.8 inches of snow.

Albany came in 5th with just 31.8 inches of snow.

The last time a city not named Buffalo won the Golden Snowball award was back in the winter of 2019-2020 when Rochester took home the award.
