As the latest blast of winter snow this week in New York State, we have had some movement in the race for the Golden Snowball award.

What's The Golden Snowball?

The Golden Snowball Award is given out to the city in New York State that gets the most snow during the Winter season. The race is between the biggest cities along the I-90 in New York, including Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, and Binghamton.

All-Time Golden Snowball Leader

Currently, at the time of this writing, Syracuse is in the lead to win the Golden Snowball Award this winter. Syracuse has received 112.1 inches of snow and is the only city in the race to get over 100 inches of snow this winter.

Right now, in 2nd place is the City of Rochester. They added to their total this week and have currently received 85.6 inches of snow this winter.

Binghamton also received a blast of snow this week, and that amount pushed them into 3rd place ahead of Buffalo in the race for the Golden Snowball. This winter, Binghamton has received 76.9 inches of snow, while Buffalo has gotten 76.5 inches of snow.

Pulling up the rear and in 5th place in the five-city race is Albany. They have only received 43 inches of snow this winter.

Are We Getting More or Less Snow Than Previous Years?

While this winter has been much snowier across New York State than last year, the average amounts this year are still well below the normal average for almost every city.

Only Binghamton has received more than its normal average amount of snow for this time of year.

We will have to wait and see if a late April or May snowstorm will change the race outcome, but it looks like Syracuse should take home the win this year.
