Strawberry Full Moon This Week In New York State

The full moon this week is set to happen early Wednesday morning, June 11th, and it will look like something we haven't seen in a long time.

The full moon will be the lowest full moon in the sky in the past 20 years.

Why Is This Full Moon Called A Strawberry Moon?

It has nothing to do with color. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the name "Strawberry" moon comes from Native Americans who would pick wild strawberries under the June full moon.

The moon will look colorful as well since it is so low. That means it moves through the Earth's astrosphere, and that causes the red hue that you will see. The moon this week might have more color to it as well, due to the amount of smoke still in the air from the wildfires in Canada.

When Is The Best Time To See June's Full Moon?

The best viewing experience will be around 3:44 am on June 11th. That is when the moon will be at its lowest and brightest. The good news is that the moon will look full the evening of June 10th, so you should still have a good chance to see it.
