Sale Of Dogs, Cats, And Rabbits Banned In New York

New York State lawmakers have taken a step toward banning the sale of Dogs, Cats, and rabbits at pet shops in the state.

Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal from Manhattan proposed the Bill that would ban the sale of animals in pet stores across the state.

According to lawmakers, the end goal of the bill would to be end the puppy mill to pet store pipeline in New York.

"It’s really a victory for the animals because it helps cut into that puppy mill pipeline where commercial breeding factories in other states produce litter after litter of genetically compromised animals and then bring them to New York state and make a lot of money off them,”

New York State is one of the largest markets in the country for animals bred for retail sale. The bill will not head to the Governor's office to be signed into law. If and when Governor Kathy Hochul signs the bill into law, the law would take effect one year from that date.

The one-year grace period would allow pet shops to make arrangements to relocate the animals to a safe place and so pet stores know to stop bringing in more animals in the store to sell.

The banning of the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits is just one of the many bills that were sent to the Governor's office to be signed into law. One of the major changes coming to New York will be gun reform. 10 new bills were sent to the Governor's office last week to be signed into law.
