All Schools Will Be Closed This Wednesday In New York
Kids all across New York State will have the day off this Wednesday.
New York State passed a new law that officially made the "Lunar New Year" a school holiday and all public schools have the day off if it falls on a school day.
The "Lunar New Year" happens on the first full moon of the new year and that date changes every year. Last year, it happened on a Saturday, and this year it happens on Wednesday.
Next year, the "Lunar New Year" will take place on Tuesday, February 17th.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul passed the new law back in September of 2023 and it officially went into effect on January 1st, 2024.
“By designating Lunar New Year as an official school holiday, we are taking an important step in recognizing the importance of New York’s AAPI community and the rich diversity that makes New York so great,” Governor Hochul said. “It is not just a day off from school – it is an opportunity for our children to learn about and celebrate their own or different cultures and traditions.”
There will be several "Lunar New Year" celebrations around the state.
Also as part of the tradition, there are several things that you should not do on the "Lunar New Year"
They include:
- No washing clothes or hair or bathing. ...
- No sweeping the floor or taking out rubbish. ...
- Do not urge someone to get out of bed.
- Do not give New Year's greetings to someone still in the bed.
- Avoid using needles, knives, or scissors.
