Low Flying Planes Expected This Week In Western New York
Starting today you might notice something unusual in the skies about Western New York.
You can expect to see low-flying planes flying around Western New York for the next week or so.
According to the Lancaster Police Department, the planes are being used by NYSEG to look at hard to reach powerlines across the region.
Those planes are expected to be flying starting today and will continue until next Friday. The time and pattern of the planes will be based on the weather and the areas that NYSEG need to observe.
NYSEG provides nearly 40% of the energy used by residents and businesses in Upstate New York.

Those users can expect to see an increase in their bill coming up in May. NYSEG is expected to increase rates for the third and final time as part of a planned rate increase proposal that was approved by New York State's Public Service Commission in July of 2023.
The first rate hike took place in October of 2023, the second was in 2024.
The upcoming rate hike will increase bills on average between $5 and $11 per month depending if the user uses gas or electricity at their home or business.
NYSEG will also spend the next several months installing "Smart Meters" at homes in Western New York. They have already installed thousands of "Smart Meters" in Western New York and are expected to be back in the area in July of 2025.
