Former Buffalo Bill Gets Exciting News About His Heisman Trophy

Reggie Bush was one of the best to ever run the football at USC.  Now, one of the awards he earned while he was there is coming back to him.

Who is Reggie Bush?

Reggie Bush played for the Buffalo Bills near the end of his career in 2016 but long before that he earned the Heisman Trophy while he was at USC in 2005.  He had an incredible season that year while playing for the Trojans.  He was able to rack up  1,740 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns while catching 37 passes for 478 yards and two additional scores.

Very few people would argue that he earned that trophy that year.

How did he lose his Heisman?

Unfortunately, Bush forfeited his Heisman Trophy in 2010 after the NCAA handed down a decision that Bush had received "improper benefits" while he was playing at USC between 2003 and 2005.  Back then, it was illegal for players to receive any compensation for playing in the NCAA.  Not only was he asked to forfeit his trophy but USC was stripped of their national championship from 2004.

Bush is being given his trophy back

In an unprecedented move, the Heisman Trust has decided to reverse its decision with regard to Bush and USC.  Today they've announced that they're going to give him his trophy back.

"We considered the enormous changes in college athletics over the last several years in deciding that now is the right time to reinstate the trophy for Reggie. We are so happy to welcome him back." - Michael Comerford, president of The Heisman Trophy Trust

The decision comes following a change in the rules in 2021 that now allows NCAA athletes to be compensated for their name, image, and likeness.

The trophy will be returned and Bush will now be invited once again to join the Heisman Trophy ceremonies starting in 2024.
