Largest Earthquakes Ever Recorded In New York State

This morning everyone is talking about feeling an earthquake in Western New York.

The earthquake was reported in Ohio and the tremors could be felt around Western New York and beyond.

Just a couple of months ago, a 3.6 earthquake struck New York. The earthquake was centered around Adams Center in Jefferson County, just 10 miles southwest of Watertown.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in New York as the state does sit on a couple of fault lines. The fault line that runs near Western and Central New York is called the Clarendon-Linden fault system.

According to the latest data, the 3.6 magnitude earthquakes today would be the largest in the Watertown, New York area in over 8 years. There have been seven different earthquakes recorded in the area since 2015.

The largest-ever earthquake to hit New York State was a 5.9 magnitude in 1944.
