Some residents of New York State felt the ground underneath them shake on Saturday night.

Earthquake Impacts Parts Of New York State


The earthquake lasted around 10 seconds, and no injuries or major damage were reported from Saturday's quake.

This was the first earthquake recorded in New York State so far this year.

When you think of earthquakes, you might think more of California than New York State, but there is a decent history of earthquakes in New York. There was a 4.8 magnitude earthquake last April in New York. That came after another earthquake just a few weeks prior. 2024 was a busy year for earthquakes in New York State.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in New York State. In fact, New York sits on a couple of different fault lines.

The fault line that runs near Western and Central New York is called the Clarendon-Linden fault system.

So what was the largest-ever earthquake to hit New York State? That would have been back in 1944 when a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck near the New York-Canadian border, causing damage in Massena.
