October Earthquake Reported In New York State

Some people near Rochester, New York, might of felt the ground shake around them after a 2.2 magnitude earthquake was reported near Pulteneyville, New York. The earthquake's center was in Lake Ontario, so the effects were muted a little bit in areas around the lake. No damage was reported from yesterday's earthquake.


Earthquakes Are More Common Than You Think In New York State

When I think of Earthquakes, I usually think of California and the West Coast, but believe it or not, New York State is a hotbed for earthquake activity. Yesterday's earthquake was the 81st reported earthquake of 2025 in New York State.

The largest earthquake so far this year has been a 3.6 magnitude that happened near Brentwood, New York, on March 31st. Only 12 of the earthquakes this year in New York were 3.0 magnitude or stronger.

There have been 16 quakes between magnitudes 2 and 3 that could be felt slightly near the epicenter. There have been 53 quakes below magnitude 2 this year in New York, and most times those earthquakes are not felt by people.

Largest Earthquake In New York State History

Earthquake records date back to 1900, and the largest earthquake ever recorded in New York State happened near Attica, New York, on August 12th, 1929. That earthquake's magnitude was recorded at 6.0. That was the only earthquake in New York State's history that was a 6.0 or higher.
