The lake effect snow band that dropped several inches of snow on the Southern Tier and Southtowns in Western New York is setting its sights on the City of Buffalo and the Northtowns.

The lake effect snow band is expected to shift and start heading back north later today with a major impact on the City of Buffalo around 3 or 4 pm today. It will stay in that area for several hours before moving off and that could lead to a massive amount of snow for the City and the Northtowns.

Snowfall rates could be as heavy as 2 inches per hour.

Snowplows have been out on the roads this morning and will continue throughout the day. The biggest issue will be the cold temperatures. Laying salt on the roads to melt the ice works best in temperatures over 15 degrees and we will be much colder than that today. Today's high is only expected to be around 9 degrees.

At the time of this writing,g there were only travel advisories in place for much of Erie County, but those could turn into bans later this afternoon.
