When I Learned About the Birds and the Bees

Do you remember when your parents told you about the Birds and the Bees? Why the heck do they call it that anyway? What do birds and bees have to do with sex? Is it a “stinger” thing?

I can’t remember hold old I was but I remember one day my Dad and Mom were going out. My brother and I were old enough to stay home alone (so we must have been about 20 ;-) ) and my Dad had this record that was a soundtrack from a filmstrip (remember those?) on human sexuality. The last thing he said to my brother and I was, “Do not play this record while we are out, I will talk to you about it later.”

So obviously as soon as the door closed my brother Mike and I took the record, found a “record player” and sat down and listened to the album in its entirety, including the little beeps (that were a cue to move to the next scene on the filmstrip).

My Dad never asked if we listened to it, we never said we did, and that was that. It must’ve done the trick, because I have two children and my brother Mike has 3 (he must have heard something on the record that I missed).
