Why Are There Low Flying Planes In New York State?
This week, you could start to see low-flying airplanes and helicopters over parts on New York State.
While it will be an unusual sight, there is a reason for it.
Why Are There Low-Flying Planes In New York?
The planes and helicopters are part of a rabies vaccination airdrop that will happen across the state starting this week.
The airdrops will happen across Genesee and Orleans counties between August 13th and Aug. 24th.
Are The Rabies Package Dangerous To Humans?
They could be if you touch or handle the packages. Officials in the health department warn people that they should not touch these tablets when they are dropped. If you come in contact with one of these packets, you can call the NYSDOH Rabies Information Line (888) 574-6656 with questions or concerns.
How Long Will The Rabies Packages Be On The Ground?
According to health officials, most rabies packages will be consumed by wildlife within four days of being dropped. The packages that are not consumed should dissolve naturally within a week.
If you feel that you need to move a rabies package before it is consumed or dissolves, the Erie County Health Department recommends you do this:
If you must move a vaccine packet:
- Wear gloves or use a plastic bag or paper towel to pick it up.
- Place any damaged baits in the trash.
- Throw intact baits into a wooded area or other raccoon/wildlife habitat.
- Residents should WASH HANDS IMMEDIATELY if they come into direct contact with the vaccine or packets, then call the NYSDOH Rabies Information Line at (888) 574-6656.
