We all know the only saying, "Monkey See, Monkey Do" and sometimes when one state changes a law or makes new mandates, other states follow right behind.

Does this mean we could soon see the Pledge of Allegiance as optional at schools in New York State?

A school in Vermont recently allowed students to opt in or opt out of standing up and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance during the school day.

According to a report from 10news.com, the school allows student and their parents to decide if they want to recite the Pledge of Allegiance during the school day.

Shaftsbury Elementary operates under the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union (school district). A representative says the union did not ban the Pledge of Allegiance but said in a statement: “Across all schools where the Pledge was recited, students and staff have the choice to opt out”

If this becomes a trend, we could see schools in New York State also offer the option to opt in or out of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

As a parent would you be for or against a policy like this? Many parents that I know want their children to be part of the Pledge and feel that if kids are going to school in America they school have to recite it.

Some parents I know think that kids should have a choice to opt-out if they want. They said it is the same as pro sports players kneeling or not coming out of the locker room during the National Anthem.

At the time of this writing, there were no ongoing discussions at school districts to change the policy about the Pledge of Allegiance so we will have to wait and see if this will impact your kids.
