New York State Police Gave Out Thousands Of Tickets Over The 4th

The long 4th of July holiday was a busy one for New York State Troopers.

During their latest "Stop DWI" campaign over the long 4th of July holiday last week, troopers issued nearly 13,000 tickets to motorists all across New York State.

According to officials with the State Police, troopers issued a total of 12,991 tickets during their July 4 STOP-DWI enforcement campaign. The enforcement period began on Friday, June 30, and ended on Wednesday, July 5.

Funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Troopers utilized sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrol, and also ticketed distracted drivers for using electronic devices. They were also targeting people who were speeding and aggressive drivers across the state.

Here is a look at the breakdown of tickets issued by the State Police.

Speeding – 4,671
Distracted driving – 322
Seatbelt violations – 1,030
Move over law – 162
DWI - 193

State Police also released a breakdown of violations by troop and region.

During the campaign, Troopers also investigated 949 crashes, including 158 personal injury crashes and five fatalities.

The amount of tickets issued this year is around the same as that the troopers issued last year during their 4th of July Stop DWI campaign. Last year troopers issued 12,160 total tickets and arrested 197 people for DWI.

The next STOP DWI campaign for the New York State Troopers is coming up on Labor Day weekend. Once again troopers will be out in full force cracking down on driving under the influence as well as distracted driving.
