With temperarture expected to plummet into single digits and below, there is one thing homeowners in New York should do to protect their home.
To help keep your water pipes from freezing you should let some of your faucets drip. This will allow water to be moving through your pipes and that lowers the chance that the water will freeze.
You don't have to turn your facuet on full blast, but you do want to it have a little drip to it so that water is moving.
You also don't have to have all your faucets drip. You want two or three faucets to be dripping with the one that is the farthest from your water value open and dripping.
You also want to make sure your outdoor facuets have a cover on them. This will help keep heat in, and make it harder for the water to freeze.

Another way to help keep your pipes from freezing is to make sure that your home is at least 60 degrees or warmer and open any doors that have pipes behind them. This will let the heat from your furnace impact the pipe directly.
If you pipe happens to freeze or burst, the first thing you want to do is whut off the main water line into the home. This will prevent water from the busted pipe from continuing to flow inside your home.
You can also use a hairdryer to help melt any ice in the broken pipe. finally you want to call a professional plumber to come and fix the pipe and make sure there are no other issues in and around your home.
