New Licenses Required For Travel Soon In New York
Most travelers in western New York are familiar with different types of identification -- a regular drivers license, EDL, passport, NEXUS, etc. So don't let the news about REAL ID make you panic.
REAL ID will be required by New Yorkers to fly within the country (domestic air travel), and to enter federal buildings or military bases. This change will go into effect on October 1, 2020.
While the change doesn't go into effect for some time, people are urged to transition to the new licenses as soon as possible. “Our goal is to make the transition to a REAL ID as simple as possible for our customers,” said Terri Egan, the DMV's executive deputy commissioner to WGRZ.
If you have a passport or enhanced drivers license -- those forms of ID are compliant with the REAL ID Act of 2005, the legislation responsible for the identification requirement changes.
