Early Winter weather predictions were calling for a colder and snowier winter across New York State but some new weather patterns might change that outlook.

A  "La Nina" storm system could mean less snow and warmer daily temperatures across the state.


WHAT IS A LA NINA?

A "La Nina" is the periodic cooling of ocean surface temperatures in the central and east-central parts of the Pacific.

WHY COULD A LA NINA BE GOOD FOR NEW YORK?

A "La Nina" would help keep arctic air above New York State and that would lead to a milder winter.

WHY COULD A LA NINA BE BAD FOR NEW YORK?

If a "La Nina" forms, it would keep the waters in Lake Erie and Lake Ontario much warmer than normal and that could end up bringing more lake effect snow into areas along the lake shore.
