Open Letter To People Who Think “There’s Nothing To Do In The Winter In Buffalo”
We call it "The Winter Blues." It's that time of year after Christmas is over, but there's still plenty of winter left. It feels like the only thing we can do is shovel and make snow angels, but there is so much more than that. You just have to be willing to get off your couch and go do it!
Is there anything to do in Buffalo besides shovel and sit in the house?
I was scrolling through TikTok this morning when I came across this video of a kid who said he was here in Western New York, hoping to become an NFL scout. Almost the entire video was him just asking why in the world anyone would want to live in Buffalo when there's nothing to do here.
Dear Damian,
We get it. Living in Buffalo can be a lot of work. We shovel a lot. We plow a lot. We work...a lot. We take pride in that here. But if that's not something you want to beat your chest about, we get it, there is still a lot to do in Western New York. It all just depends on what you like to do.
I'd assume that someone who loves football loves being outside. They probably love being active and getting some exercise. Have you checked out our skiing yet? Not only are our slopes and resorts perfect for just about every skill level, but they're pretty affordable compared to some of the other resorts across the state.
Take a hike. See some of the scenery, like the Eternal Flame at Chesnut Ridge State Park or Niagara Falls under ice. It's pretty crazy to think that it freezes even when it's almost always moving.
If you really want to see why people live in Buffalo, get on a snowmobile and see just how pretty it is here (even when there are feet of snow on the ground).
Maybe knock something off your bucket list. Have you ever tried curling? Want to go ice skating? You can do both of those things at Canalside. Maybe take a ride on the ice bumper cars or the ice bikes.

Immerse yourself in food culture. Try out some of our restaurants. You'll be pretty impressed. Go on your own mission to find the best wings in Buffalo. We have things like the Williamsville Soup Stroll, where you can help raise some money for charities while sampling some of the best soups in the area.
If all else fails, we like to drink. You're a young guy. You probably like to do that. We do that a lot in Buffalo, too, because there's just nothing like a night in with a group of friends and some drinks to help you get through the cold. Want to see what some of our beers taste like? Check out this event coming to the Buffalo Convention Center:

So yeah, that's just a handful of things that we like to do in the winter around here that don't involve shoveling snow or making snow angels. There are a ton more. All you have to do is have an open mind and be willing to do them. If you've already made your mind up that Buffalo is a boring, gray, city with nothing to do, you might find that. But if you are willing to look, you'll see that there is a ton to do, and a bunch of good people to do it with.
Then if you still don't think it's for you, it just might not be. And that's ok.
