This will be WNY's 7th consecutive day of 90+ heat...

WIVB-TV Meteorologists tell us that it’s already going to feel quite unbearable today, but the hottest weather is yet to come.  It appears as though the actual air temperatures will soar well into the middle 90s Thursday, and lower to middle 90s Friday.  That combined with truly oppressive humidity will result in heat indices around 100 during the afternoon hours across the Niagara Frontier.

Increasing heat, combined with humidity, will make for dangerously high heat indices making it difficult especially for the very young, seniors, and those contending with health complications.   It is advised that people limit exertion during the peak heating period of the days and remain hydrated.  Any rain will produce temporary rain-cooled air.  It should be mainly rain-free during the day Thursday.

The chance for rain increases toward the weekend with some thunderstorms Saturday afternoon, and lingering rain showers Sunday morning.    The clouds and rain will result in a somewhat cooler Sunday, but that will only be temporary as summery heat surges back into the region by the middle of the week.

THURSDAY: Hot, Oppressively Humid, Sunny, High: 89-96, Heat Index near 100 metro northward.

FRIDAY: Partly Sunny, Hot, Very Humid, High: 94, Heat Index near 100 metro northward.

Tips to survive the heat

  • Drink water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Take a bottle with you always.
  • Hot cars kill. Never leave kids, older people or pets in cars. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes.
  • Keep cool. Seek out air-conditioned buildings, draw your blinds, use a fan, take cool showers and dress in light and loose clothing made from natural fabrics.
  • Plan ahead. Schedule activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising in the heat. If you must go out, wear a hat and sunscreen and take a bottle of water with you.
  • Check in on others. Look after those most at risk in the heat – your neighbour living alone, the elderly, the young, people with a medical condition and don’t forget your pets.
