If you are traveling around New York this weekend you might want to have a paper map backup.


 

The storms could end up impacting satellite communications which could have an impact on GPS and cell phone service across the state.  

Officials with NOAA issued a warning that these solar storms can cause glitches and fluctuations in GPS systems.

Electric power transmission and satellite communications could also be impacted by the storms. In some places, GPS could be degraded or inoperable for hours.

Back in 2003, severe geomagnetic storms took out power grids in Sweden and South Africa. Experts say even when the storms are over this weekend, there could be issues with GPS for days.

The good news is that there are several navigation satellites in orbit that service should not be lost for a long.
