The weather today will be another sunny warm day but there is a weather warning for parts of New York State.

Today the National Weather Service has issued an elevated fire weather concern for this afternoon and evening. So what does that mean?

WHAT IS AN ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONCERN?

According to the National Weather Service, there is a fire concern issued when the weather conditions are ripe for the potential spread of wildfires, prescribed burns, and other fires in an area.

WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS THAT LEAD TO AN ELEVATED FIRE CONCERN?

There are four areas that officials will look at to determine if an elevated fire concern should be issued. Those areas are low relative humidity, strong surface wind, unstable air, and drought.

WHY WAS AN ELEVATED FIRE CONCERN ISSUED FOR TODAY?

The National Weather Service issued the elevated fire concern for today because of the way two different fronts are set up. It will bring very windy and dry conditions that could lead to the spread of unattended fires or fires that get out of control.

HIGH PRESSURE WILL SETTLE ACROSS THE CAROLINAS TODAY WHILE A WEAK
COLD FRONT APPROACHES FROM QUEBEC. THIS WILL SUPPORT
SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS OF 15 TO 30 MPH, WITH GUSTS AS HIGH AS 45 MPH
ACROSS PARTS OF THE REGION. DRYING FUELS AND LOWERING RELATIVE
HUMIDITY VALUES TO 25 TO 35 PERCENT WILL LEAD TO ELEVATED FIRE
WEATHER CONCERNS.

HOW LONG IS THE ELEVATED FIRE CONCERN IN PLACE?

The National Weather Service has issued an elevated fire concern for this afternoon and early evening. The alert will expire around 4:45 pm this afternoon.
