You could start off 2025 with some extra money in your pocket.

Now is the perfect time to check with New York State to see if there is any unclaimed money under your name.

New York State has a website set up where you can check to see if there was any money in 2024 that was left unclaimed and if any of that money could be yours.

Unclaimed money in New York State comes from several different sources like balances on closed bank accounts, unreturned security deposits on apartments, and other rentals.

Last year New York State gave back over $500 million dollars to rightful owners and now has around $19 billion dollars to give back this year.

According to the New York State Comptroller office's website, New York State returns around $1.5 million dollars every day to New Yorkers.

You can check the website HERE to see if you have any unclaimed funds in New York State.

In New York State there is no timeframe for when the state needs to return the money its rightful owner.

That means that you could have unclaimed money in New York State from 5, 10, or 20 years and you could still claim it.

Heirs can also claim money from New York State if their parent, spouse, or child have passed away.

When does money get deemed unclaimed? Usually, money not returned to its rightful owner will be sent to the New York State Comptroller's office after 3 to 5 years and be labeled as unclaimed.
