Another Wild Bear Spotted In Western New York

Warm weather is here and it looks like wild bears are coming out of the woodwork across Western New York.

It looks like another bear has been spotted in the town of Colden. A friend of mine posted on her Facebook page that a bear was spotted walking around Lower East Hill Road just down from Wohlhueter on Wednesday around 11 am.

You are also asked to call the police if you see a bear in the area and it shows any sort of aggressive behavior.

Police also advised residents in the area to secure their trash cans and outdoor bird feeders. Plus residents were asked to keep a watch on pets that go outside and if possible keep those pets inside.

If you happen to see a bear around your home here are some things to do and not do if you come across a Black Bear according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

If You Encounter a Bear:

Do:
Most black bears prefer to avoid humans.
Use noise to scare bears away: Yell, clap, or bang pots immediately upon sighting a bear near your campsite.
Stay calm: Walk slowly and speak in a loud and calm voice.
Leave slowly: Cautiously back away from the bear and leave the area.

Don't:
Approach, surround, or corner a bear: Bears aggressively defend themselves when they feel threatened. Be especially cautious around cubs as mother bears are very protective.
Run from a bear: They may chase.
Throw your backpack or food bag at an approaching bear: This will only encourage bears to approach and "bully" people to get food. By teaching a bear to approach humans for food, you are endangering yourself, other campers/residents, and the bears.
You also never want to feed a bear any type of food.
