You might have heard about this viral life hack that is sweeping the internet.

Now that bad weather is here in New York, more and more people are putting a quarter in their freezer.

Here is the reason why. The quarter can help you determine if you have lost power or not. It's true.

It is simple too. All you have to do is fill a cup with water and place it in the freezer until frozen solid. Then you put a quarter on top of the cup and put it back in the freezer.

If you are away from your home and you think you have lost power during a storm, you check the cup. If the quarter is still on top of the frozen glass of water, you didn't lose power, or if you did not for a long time.

  • If your quarter is still on top of the cup: This means you didn't lose power or if you did, it wasn't for a long period of time. The food in your freezer should be good to go.
  • If the quarter has sunk to the bottom: That means you lost power for an extended amount of time. The cup of water is completely thawed and that means everything else in your freezer is thawed too. You should toss that food because it could be spoiled.
  • If the quarter is somewhere in the middle: That means that you lost power for some time but not a really long amount of time. Your food could still be ok to eat.
