Trending Stories In Western New York: Thursday Edition
Here is what's happening across Western New York.
1 –Today will kickoff a nice stretch of fall like weather here in the 716. Today we are looking at mostly sunny skies with a high near 65. We will see a mix of sun and clouds for tomorrow and heading into the weekend as well High will be in the mid 60s before a cold front will be cooler temperatures to the area next week where we could have our 1st frost of the season.

2 –The dock worker strike will have an impact on certain food groups including Bananas. NY Governor Kathy Hochul announced that due to the strike, there could be a shortage of bananas across the state. Around 75% of all bananas are imported. The good news according to Governor Hochul is that massive shortages are not expected in New York. Currently, 47,000 dock workers are on strike and this is the first massive strike at area docks since 1977.

3– There could be some really good news for area skiers and snowboarders. Some early weather predictions are calling for above-average amounts of snow towards the end of October and into November which means ski resorts could open early. Again these weather predictions are from early computer models but if they work out, it could end up being a longer than normal ski season this year in Western New York.
4 – A Geomagnetic Storm Watch has been issued after a massive flare from the sun was sent towards Earth yesterday. This storm could cause some minor issues with GPS systems and satellite communications. It will also allow us to see the Northern Lights in Western New York. The storm should push the southern boundary of the Northern lights into the 716. The best time to view the Northern Lights will be between 10 pm and 3 am.
5- This Saturday one of the coolest events in High School sports is taking place. The Frontier Boys soccer team will be celebrating their senior night with a special trick-or-treat event. The community is invited to come enjoy the game and trick or treat around the field during half-time. Head Coach Rich Kozak said the event is a great way for the community to support local high school athletes. The event will kick off around 6:15pm.

6 - There were some big names on the Bills injury report as the team gets ready to take on Houston. On that list was Josh Allen who is recovering from an injured left hand. He was a full participant at practice yesterday. Dion Dawkins didn’t practice yesterday due to a hamstring injury. Terrel Bernard and Taron Johnson were limited in practice and are still questionable for Sunday’s game. Taylor Rapp and Khalil Shakir both didn’t practice yesterday after getting injured in Sunday’s loss to Baltimore. The Bills are on the road in Hoston on Sunday with kickoff set for 1 pm.
