State Police Are Cracking Down On This Starting Today
Starting today through June 13, New York State Police will be on the lookout for speeders and aggressive drivers.
It's known as "Speed Week," and State Troopers will be using both marked and unmarked cars (known as CITEs) as part of the operation, according to the New York State Police website.
"The CITE vehicles allow Troopers to more easily identify motorists who are violating laws while driving. These vehicles blend in with every day traffic but are unmistakable as emergency vehicles once the emergency lighting is activated," according to a statement from the State Police.
Speeding is one of the major factors that contribute to vehicle accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for people ages 3 to 33.
The New York State Police website states, "During the August 2017 Speed Week campaign, State Police issued more than 19,000 traffic tickets including more than 7,900 for speeding, and over 580 for distracted driving."
A grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee provides funding for "Speed Week."
In addition to speeding, officers will be looking out for other traffic violations such as distracted or impaired driving, seat belt compliance, and the Move Over law.
