We had our first look at summer-like weather here in Western New York this week. The temperatures got above 90 for the first time since August 28th, 2021.

Of course that kicked off the great Thermostat debate in my house. I like being cool but I also like saving money so I think the perfect temperature is around 72.

My wife on the other hand likes it really cold and then likes to complain about being cold even though she sets the thermostat at 69. So where is the perfect sweet spot to set your Thermostat in the summer?

According to directenergy.com the ideal temperature for summertime is a "blazing" 78 degrees!

To stay comfortable and save money this summer, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78F when you are home. Setting your air conditioner to this level will allow you to stay cool and avoid an unusually high electricity bill

Yes...78 degrees in the summertime when you are at home. I like saving money but to me, that is a bit excessive and I think my wife would pass out if we kept the house at 78!

Now if you REALLY want to save money this year, it is recommended that you crack up the AC or even turn it off when you are not home.

Keeping your house warmer while you are away can help you save even more money this summer. Turning your thermostat up seven to 10 degrees higher while you are away at work, or any time you're out of the house for more than two hours, can help you save as much as 10 percent on cooling costs. So, to save money and energy while you're away in the summer, set your thermostat to 88F

I know I ain't doing that but we do have our Nest Thermostat on ECO when we are not home so we are trying to save some money.

So where do most people in Western New York set the thermostat in the summer? The average is around 71 degrees.
