
You Could See The Northern Lights Tonight Across New York
It is not often that you can walk out onto your backyard patio or your front porch and see the Northern Lights.

Tonight, if the skies clear up, you might have a chance to catch the aurora borealis right from your home here in New York.

According to NOAA, the visibility line of the Northern Lights will drop down into the Northern parts of New York. If you are along Lake Erie or Lake Ontario, there is a good chance you can see the aurora borealis tonight.
Here is a map of tonight's (February 28th, 2023) aurora borealis line according to NOAA. You can see the red line just dips into New York State.
The best time to view the aurora borealis will be between 6 pm tonight and 6 am tomorrow morning.
The Northern Lights have been somewhat visible for the past 48 hours. Check out this photo from Twitter of aurora borealis in Canandaigua.
So what exactly is aurora borealis? They are lights created when there are interactions between the solar wind, which is the stream of charged particles emanating from the sun, and the Earth's magnetic field. The collision of the two causes the cascade of lights.
