North Tonawanda Police Department 'Night Out' [GALLERY]

Every August on the first Tuesday of the month there is a community-building campaign across the United States called National Night Out.

The National Night Out Website describes it best:

National Night Out promotes police-community partnerships to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. bringing police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Millions take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states.

Neighborhoods nationwide host safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits, and more.

North Tonawanda Police Chief Thomas Krantz again this year invited me to emcee the event held in the parking lot behind the North Tonawanda Police Department.

The event featured a variety of agencies, first responders, community groups, politicians, and of course interested citizens and their families.

The North Tonawanda event featured K-9 Demonstrations from the New York State Police and the North Tonawanda Police Department, A fire hose demonstration where children (aided by the North Tonawanda Fire Department) were able to see the force of the hoses used to dispel fires. The U.S. Department of Immigration and Border Protection had a display and handed out take-home items to visitors.

The Niagara County Sheriffs Department's Victim Assistance Program was there to explain the benefits they provide to crime victims. There were a Child Safety Seat Checkpoint, a Specialty Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) vehicle guests got the opportunity to tour and sit in. The Niagara County Health Department was represented to discuss mental health and drug awareness.

A favorite of children and adults alike was when the Niagara County Sheriffs Office Helicopter piloted by LT. Ron Steen landed to cheers from the crowd.

And of course 96.1 The Breeze was there to show support for our community.
