Hurricane Fiona is the second major hurricane to slam into Puerto Rico in five years. The hurricane took down the power grid on the island and many people are still without power. Hurricane Fiona dropped almost 30 inches of rain on parts of the island while bringing sustained winds of 85 miles per hour.

The Governor said the state needed to help those on the island since it has the largest Puerto Rican population in the country.

“We have a long history, a long connection, with the people of Puerto Rico. I’m very proud to be the governor of a state with one of the largest Puerto Rican populations in our nation,”

New York State is also prepared to send an additional 100 Spanish-speaking New York State troopers to the island in two weeks to help manage relief efforts.

Governor Kathy Hochul is also reaching out to non-profits across the state looking for additional help with supplies and manpower on the island.

Major corporations that have facilities in the state also pledge support for relief efforts. Delta, JetBlue, and Coca-Cola have all stepped up to help New York aid with Puerto Rico relief efforts.
