New York Answers: Can You Have More Than One Best Friend?
Monday was National Best Friend Day, and that led to a debate on whether you can have more than one best friend. My thoughts on this question have put me in the minority, but I am here to tell you that my answer is the right one.
Can You Have More Than One "Best" Friend?
The simple answer is no.

The complex answer is that you can have different types of "best friends," like a male best friend, a co-worker best friend, a high school best friend, but if you really think about a best friend, there is one person that fits the bill.
The reason for this is the definition of the word "best". According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of " best " is: excelling all others.
That means that your best friend is a friend who excels above all other friends. Using that definition, you could only have one best friend.

Even if you broke your friends into groups like co-workers, High school, or College best friends, your true best friend would be the person who is excelling all others. One of those friends in the group would also be higher up on your list than friends in all other groups, making that person your "Best Friend."
So in my opinion and in the opinion of Merriam-Webster, you can only have one true best friend.
What do you think, can you have more than one best friend, or do you have lots of close friends but only one "best" friend? Let me know your thoughts HERE or send me a message using our free app.
