Upcoming Massive Freeze Bad For Gardeners In New York
It looks like Mother Nature is going to make it just a bit harder for local gardeners.
Feel Good Mornings With Dave Fields Mon-Fri 6am-10am
A massive cold front is set to swoop down from the North and bring below-freezing conditions across New York State over the next couple of days.
If you already planted some of your crops, there are certain things that you can do to help them during this deep freeze.
PICK IT UP
If possible, move the plant into a pot and inside to a warmer place
COVER THEM UP
Place a cover over the plant. Use something like sheets, towels, cardboard or a tarp. Try to avoid the covering from touching the foliage. Also make sure to remove the coverings in the morning when temperatures rise and the frost dissipates.
USE WATER TO HELP
Watering the plants right near sundown will help raise overnight air temperature as the water evaporates. Also, you can fill jugs or buckets with water and place them in the sun during the day and the warm water will be the temperature around the plant warmer at night.
TURN ON THE LIGHTS
Lightbulbs give off heat, so having a lamp or lights on near the plants will bring some heat to them as well
KEEP THE AIR FLOWING
Use a small fan to blow air over the plants. The movement of the air will help keep frost from forming
