Adult cannabis use in the state is legal, but there are some important things you need to know. This is your guide to legal marijuana use in New York State.

1. Even though adult-use sales have not begun in NY, if you are 21 years or older, you can legally possess and use marijuana.

2. Adult-use of marijuana is regulated by the New York State Office of Cannabis Management.

3. Not every local municipality in New York will allow recreational marijuana sales or on-site commercial use.

4. There is a legal limit to what you can possess for personal consumption,

Adults 21 years of age or older will be allowed to buy and possess up to three ounces of cannabis flower and up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis (oils, tincture, edibles, vapes, etc.)

5. Technically, you can only buy cannabis from a state-licensed dispensary and must show identification to prove you are 21 years or older.

6. Just because marijuana use is legal, does not mean that you can use it anywhere. You are permitted to use it at home or a facility that is licensed to have on-site adult use.

7. Weed smoking is banned anywhere tobacco is prohibited.

8. A landlord can't refuse to rent a property to a tenant who uses cannabis, but the use of marijuana may be prohibited on the property.

9. Marijuana use can also be banned at a hotel or temporary rental property, like an Airbnb.

10. Marijuana is still illegal federally, so you cannot use it on federal land or in federal buildings.

11. Driving while using weed or having consumed it is illegal.

12. It is against the law for anyone under the age of 21 to consume marijuana. Adults are not permitted to provide cannabis to underage people.

13. There are regulations in place for the home-growing of marijuana.

14. While your employer can not discriminate against you for being a marijuana user, they can prohibit you from being under the influence or using it on the job.
