One-Time Utility Relief Payment Coming To New Yorkers
Governor Kathy Hochul announced $200 million in utility relief for 8 million New Yorkers. Gov. Hochul announced the payment on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
The New York State Public Service Commission adopted a $200 million New York State energy bill credit to help gas and electric customers reduce their bills. The one-time payment will be administered by electric and gas utilities on behalf of their customers. The credit will help more than 8 million New Yorkers. Gov. Hochul said,
Every New Yorker deserves affordable and clean energy, which is why I fought to secure additional funds to provide financial relief for hardworking families. Energy affordability continues to be a top priority in my clean energy agenda and this utility bill credit is just one of many actions New York is taking to reduce costs for our most vulnerable New Yorkers.
Customers can expect to see the credit applied to their payment within approximately 45 days of the utility companies receiving the budget funds.
New York State Will Pay Your Heating Bill
The Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as HEAP, is open for the 2023-2024 winter season. Low- and middle-income residents and seniors can apply to receive up to $976 in aid. The Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance distributes the assistance payments. New Yorkers who need help can receive one regular benefit per season.
New York State also offers emergency benefits. The 2023-2024 Emergency benefit application process opened on January 2, 2024.
