New York residents will get two new holidays. This is in addition to the two new holidays the state has already added. What comes to mind, for my 80s babies, is Madonna,

"If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate
Just one day out of life
It would be
It would be so nice."

According to USA.gov, we recognize 12 federal holidays, or an average of one per month. Sometimes, as a working-class person, it seems like we only recognize Thanksgiving and Christmas. Those are the holidays where the whole entire country shuts down. The rest seem to be based on preference. At my job, we get two flex or personal holidays and a handful of other holidays. I've never really counted because, as a radio personality, I often work on holidays. It's for that same reason I don't really have any favorite holidays, but I do appreciate the week between Christmas and New Year's Day, when much of America goes dark. Outside of that, we are constantly hustling and bustling, even on "holidays."

Trump has announced two new holidays. This is on top of the new holidays that New York State previously announced.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul declared the Asian Lunar New Year a public school holiday in 2023. The law requires all public schools in the state to close to allow residents to celebrate. In addition, she signed legislation to make Diwali a school holiday for New York City public schools.

Now, Trump has added two new holidays! Trump announced the two new holidays on his own social media platform on Monday, May 5 (Cinco De Mayo), 2025. Americans will now acknowledge and celebrate the end of World War I and World War II with "Victory Days." It might sound like the eerie beginnings of a dystopian society (or maybe Russia or North Korea), but they are 2 new holidays Trump wants New Yorkers to acknowledge (although you should not expect to get a paid day off).

He wrote that he would rename May 8 as "Victory Day for World War II." Also, without consulting actual veterans, Trump announced that he would like to rename Veterans Day as "Victory Day for World War I." However, there was backlash from veterans' groups and Americans, so I guess that name is up in the air.

Personally, I don't care what holidays you celebrate. That's the beautiful thing about what America was...you do you, I'll do me. We can come together and celebrate the holidays that we observe, but you celebrating something that is not important to me does not mean disrespect or hate. Somehow, we've ended up in a place where if people celebrate different holidays, they are the "enemy."

Anyway, Happy "whatever you choose to celebrate!"
