Douglas Development agreed to buy the 90,000-square-foot school building from the City of Buffalo and plans to spend around $15 million converting it to 90 luxury apartments. When complete, the site will have 40 studio apartments, 27 one-bedrooms, 22 two-bedrooms, and one three-bedroom apartment. As a luxury building, the site will also have other amenities like a fitness room and an outdoor courtyard.
The former Black Rock Academy was initially built in 1894 and had an addition added to the building in 1927. The building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, has been officially closed since 2005, but Buffalo Public School officials had considered using the building as a flex site, a temporary building that could house students while other schools were being remodeled.
