Customers who do their shopping at Tops Friendly Markets will want to check their pantries after a serious recall has been announced for garlic that was sold there.

Tops is voluntarily recalling garlic

Tops Friendly Markets has announced a recall for garlic that was sold in their stores in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. It includes 6 oz. packages of Christopher Ranch peeled garlic. They state that the reason for the recall is that the product "needs to be 32 to 37 degrees, and the open-air coolers that they have cannot get to this temperature."

The UPC number for this particular package of garlic is 00007457410852 and includes all code dates.

This is considered a serious recall

Recalls are broken down into two separate classes. Class II involves a potential health hazard where there is a remote probability of a health problem if the food is eaten. However, Class I recalls are more serious.  Their description claims, "This is the most serious. Eating the food may cause health problems or even death."

This garlic recall is a Class I recall.
