The Buffalo Bills continue to be the storyline in Western New York, but don't look now...the Buffalo Sabres are back this Thursday.

The Sabres will drop the puck on their regular season slate against the New York Rangers this Thursday night at KeyBank Center.

The expectations for the Sabres are playoffs. If you have heard any player since the end of last season, the goal in 2023-2024 is to make the postseason. They barely missed the playoffs last season, missing the last spot by just two points.

The Sabres have pretty much their entire roster back, with some key additions on defense: Connor Clifton and Erik Johnson. They also have rookie forward Zach Benson, who made the opening night roster at just 18 years old. He was the Sabres first round pick this year.

Star defenseman Rasmus Dahlin is the player in the news today though. He signed a massive eight-year extension, worth $11 million per season. Only Erik Karlsson is paid more at the defenseman position.

Dahlin's previous contract extension was a bridge deal, which has become a little more common in recent years, but for general manager Kevyn Adams, he wants to wrap up his star players as soon as possible.

The contract ties Dahlin to Buffalo through the 2031-2032 season. Dahlin will be 31 years old when the contract expires.

What Dahlin said about Buffalo after the extension was simply amazing. This quote brought Sabres fans to tears.

Dahlin doesn't want to be anywhere else but Buffalo. He learned the language and culture here and is forever tied to the region.

There's no doubt that Dahlin is the future captain of the team. This will likely be Kyle Okposo's last season in Buffalo, which means they will be looking to name a new captain. Dahlin will be that choice, with Dylan Cozens and Alex Tuch likely wearing the alternate captain letters.
